Land Use Change Impacts on Water Quality in Three Lake Winnipeg Watersheds

Abstract: Lake Winnipeg eutrophication results from excess nutrient loading due to agricultural activities across the watershed. Estimating nonpoint-source pollution and the mitigation effects of beneficial management practices (BMPs) is an important step in protecting the water quality of streams and receiving waters. The use of computer models to systematically compare different landscapes and agricultural systems across the Red-Assiniboine basin has not been attempted at watersheds of this size in Manitoba. In this s… Show more

“…The sub-basins within the La Salle watershed (Fig. 1a) were defined in a previous modelling exercise using the watershed delineation tool in SWAT (Yang et al, 2014) and the 90 m digital elevation model (DEM) derived from the NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data. Soil datasets with scales ranging from 1 : 20 000 to and 2012 that included each parcel of land in the study area (Yang et al, 2014).…”

The Ag-Capture tool is a geospatial, agricultural land use inventory and mapping tool developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (OECD, 2013) that validates remote-sensed land use classification using field surveys.…”
