Land Use Change at Sub-Watershed Level

Abstract: Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULCC) is a major driver of environmental problems like water pollution, decreased soil quality, and natural resource scarcity. Measuring LULCC is necessary to better understand the present condition of watersheds. Time series LULCC mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), high-resolution imagery, and field data collection are effective methods for examining LULCC trends. The Mahadev Khola watershed in Bhaktapur, Nepal, acts as a primary source of drinking water for p… Show more

“…Since most cultivated areas in Nepal are frequently close to urban areas, farmers and urban dwellers compete for these lands. As a result, there is a high probability of transition of cultivated lands to built-up lands, as reported by various studies (Adhikari, Shrestha, Singh, Upadhaya, & Stapp, 2016;Ishtiaque et al, 2017;Rai et al, 2020;Rimal et al, 2020Rimal et al, , 2018. The increase in new urban and semi-urban areas may raise the area's temperature, leading to UHIs.…”

“…Estimating historical LUCC trends is essential in assessing the rate at which change occurs; permit exploration of the drivers of that change and related implications [12]. Due to LUCC implications on watershed degradation, impacts like decline in river water quality and quantity often take route [13]. Degraded watersheds have posed serious problems for the environment and people living within river environments [3].…”

“…[12]. PES provides ample opportunities to solve acute water scarcity problems for domestic and agricultural purposes, particularly in pre-monsoon months when perennial water bodies such as rivers and streams have reduced flows and even dry up altogether [21][22][23][24]. PES mechanisms provide incentives for local communities to conserve natural capital through the distribution and transfer of livelihood resources and financial support [25,26].…”
