Land Use Change Affects Soil Organic Carbon: An Indicator of Soil Health

Abstract: Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a major indicator of soil health. Globally, soil contains approximately 2344 Gt of organic carbon (OC), which is the largest terrestrial pool of OC. Through plant growth, soil health is connected with the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. Provides ecosystem services which include climate regulation, water supplies and regulation, nutrient cycling, erosion protection and enhancement of biodiversity. Global increase in land use change from natural vegetation to agricultural … Show more

“…5b ). Soil microbial biomass represents the living fraction of organic carbon and is an important component of soil health 37 , 38 . Fields with low microbial carbon content appeared to benefit more from AMF inoculations, suggesting that AMF are particularly important when soil health is low.…”

“…Crucial environmental services provided by soil microbes include nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and soil remediation [1,2]. Changes in land composition affect the assemblage of soil microorganisms, which has serious ramifications for crop nutrition and health [3,4].…”

“…Soil temperature, soil moisture, and pH influence microbial activity to conserve native soil organic matter enhancing soil organic carbon quantity across the blended amendments with T5, T3, and T6 showed the highest amount in Ahu, Sali, and Boro fields at the time of harvest. Soil organic carbon is an indicator of soil quality (Ngatia et al, 2021). Overall, the untreated soil (T1) took in the lowest soil moisture among the amendments in all three cropping seasons at the harvest stage.…”
