Land suitability location analysis for housing development using GIS

Abstract: Application and implementation of location suitability analyses are powered through the use of GIS along with spatial analysis component, which enables the creation of buffers, overlay, termination, proximity analysis, spatial unity, map algebra, reclassification of raster and other operations. In terms of land suitability, GIS helps the user to define which locations are most appropriate or inappropriate for certain developments. Consequently, GIS as a tool becomes more important to provide support for decisi… Show more

“…1). In many municipalities in Kosovo including city of Prishtina in the last 15 years, during the planning process and especially when the need of the urban growth boundary and designation of areas for future development are made under the influence of subjective factors, urban boundaries expanded in inappropriate, unsuitable locations often with a high degree of risk [7]. Results in Table I show that 85% of the land is designated for residential buildings.…”

“…Every sustainable community would provide social amenities, infrastructure, safety, and privacy to enhance the residents' quality of life that meet their needs and demands. The selection of location is vital to sustainable residential housing development because it affects human development and livability (Murseli & Isufi, 2014) since the location influences the sustainability of the residential and market price, social amenities, accessibility, and available services require more attention (Ahmad & Matori, 2016;Masri et al, 2016). The parameters of the built environment, specifically for the dwelling area, such as services offered, commercial areas, accessibility, and other amenities, have to be balanced in relation to the walking distance and travel durations from one location to another during the decision-making process (Chen, 2014;van Maarseveen et al, 2018).…”

“…Vulnerability mapping and geospatial analysis may be employed to discover vulnerable regions because most of these characteristics have spatial dimensions (Shen, 2000). For this type of study, a Geographic Information System (GIS) can be employed, which is defined as "a computer system for recording, storing, querying, analyzing, and presenting geographic data" (Murseli and Isufi, 2014). The data that is geo-referenced and processed in a way that allows a decision-maker to make decisions is the information employed in GIS.…”
