The natural resources are becoming scanty in developing country like Ethiopia to support over increased human population without deprivation, scientific approach of land suitability is important to make a proper decision for sustainable agricultural development and maximizing the best use of the land resources. With the deliberation of Rainfed conditions of maize, sorghum and wheat, land suitability evaluation was carried out at Bilate Alaba Subwatershed. Uses of maximum limitation and parametric (Storie and Square root) were applied for the determination of land suitability categories of land characteristics. The result showed that climate is highly suitable (S1) for maize whereas moderately suitable (S2) for sorghum and wheat. From total sub-watershed, 2.45% is marginally suitable (S3) for wheat and 97.55% is moderately suitable (S2) for maize and sorghum production using FAO land evaluation method whereas offering Storie method, 14.75% of sub-watershed is marginally suitable (S3) for sorghum and wheat, 85.25% is moderately suitable (S2) for sorghum and wheat cultivation. Considering maize production under rain-fed conditions, all mapping units were moderately suitable (S2). Parametric Square root result revealed that four soil mapping units were moderately suitable (S2) for maize, wheat and sorghum crops in the sub-watershed. Soil fertility (phosphorus and nitrogen), moisture stress and erosion hazard were the most limiting factors in the sub-watershed. Soil management practices may recover soil fertility with the application of animal manures and household wastes for nitrogen and phosphorus limitations, proper natural resource protection practice to cut the effects of erosion due to topographic features.

Land suitability analysis is one of the most beneficial applications in planning and managing land recourses. The main objective of this study was to assess suitable areas for sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) cultivation in Agamsa sub watershed, Northeastern Ethiopia by integrating an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods with Geographic Information System (GIS). Soil, climate and topographic characteristics were considered for suitability assessments in the study. The potential land suitability results showed that 116.65 ha (28.58%) and 291.47 ha (71.42%), of the area is highly suitable and moderately suitable for sorghum crop production respectively. The study has shown that the area is the potential for producing sorghum crops. However, it should be noted that the combined use of organic and inorganic fertilizers, appropriate tillage management coupled with soil and water conservation measures should be taken into consideration to enhance the current land suitability of the study area and improve the yield of the selected crop. Land suitability analysis is a prerequisite for sustainable agricultural production. This study was aimed at evaluating the current physical land suitability for major cereal crops: teff, wheat, barley and maize in the Dabo-Hana district, Bunno Bedelle Zone, Southwest Ethiopia. A GIS and RS technique with a multicriteria evaluation approach was applied for evaluating the physical land suitability for the major crops. Various physical land attributes, namely temperature, rainfall, altitude, slope, soil (soil depth, PH, texture, and drainage), land use land cover, accessibility to market and proximity to road have been used as input parameters. Physical land suitability maps were generated for the major cereal crops. The optimum vector overlay analysis results revealed that from the total area, 15,298 ha (20.34%) and 12,494 ha (16.8%) is highly suitable and moderately suitable for all teff, wheat, barley, and maize crop production, respectively. The remaining area has a mixed suitability status (suitable for some crops and unsuitable for others) for all the analyzed crops. This study demonstrated that based on physical land suitability analysis the study area has huge potential for cereal crop production. GIS and RS application techniques were applied to use the Multi-criteria decision support system. Different physical agricultural land attributes, namely temperature, rainfall, altitude, slope, soil (soil depth, PH, texture, and drainage), land use land cover, accessibility to market, and proximity to road have been used as input parameters. The result shows that about 37% of the study area is suitable for all the selected major cereal crops. Whereas the remaining area has mixed suitability like some areas are only suitable for either one or two or three types of crops. The finding of this study is useful for decision-makers to ensure optimized agricultural land-use planning to maximize cereal crop production to enhance food security in the community.
