Agricultural sector is the main economic activity of the society and also the source of people economy strengthening. The purpose of this study was to determine the priority direction of the development of the agricultural sector, mainly to determine the most appropriate types of commodities for each land unit that serve as local agricultural base. AHP method was integrated with GIS technique to analyze as well as to create land suitability maps for food crops. The results showed that 25.4 percent of lands in Yogyakarta is highly suitable for rice, while only 16 and 2 percent, respectively, is suitable for groundnut and corn. The limiting factors to the land suitability for these three commodities were plant roots condition, nutrients availability, nutrient retention, and soil condition. Suitable lands for rice, groundnut and corn were distributed at Ledok Wonosari, Middle Slope of Merapi, Lower Slope of Merapi and Batur Agung. Abstrak Sektor pertanian adalah kegiatan ekonomi utama masyarakat dan juga sumber penguatan ekonomi rakyat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan arah prioritas pengembangan sektor pertanian, terutama untuk menentukan jenis komoditas yang paling tepat pada setiap unit lahan / wilayah yang berfungsi sebagai basis pertanian lokal. Red chili the vegetable commodities with significant economic value. The supply of chili is often constrained, so it is necessary to increase the land. Land suitability evaluation is needed to determine the suitable of land in Mangunan, Bantul for cultivation of red chili. The objective of this study is to identify land characteristics for red chili to facilitate the expansion of cultivation areas. The study was done using a survey method The soil analysis is conducted in accordance with the methodology prescribed by the Indonesian Centre for Land Resources and Agriculture. The results showed that the actual land suitability at altitudes of 0-300 m asl is S3 with a limiting factor being P element. The height of 300-350 m asl is N with limiting factor slope of land. At altitudes of 350-400 and 400-450 m asl is S3 with limiting factors C- organic and P element. After evaluation and improvement efforts, the suitability of potential land at an altitude of 0-300, 350-400 and 400-450 m asl was S2 with improve the addition of organic matter or fertilization P. The altitude of 300-350 m asl was S3 with improve making bench terraces and parallel planting.

Decision Support System for Selecting Mung Bean Cultivation Sites in Central Thailand Based on Soil Suitability Class

Information to aid the selection of suitable cultivated areas remains meager for mung bean, despite it being a socio-economically important legume crop in Thailand. Hence, a user-friendly soil assessment tool is required to help properly choose planting areas. We aimed to provide a decision support system for mung bean cultivation in central Thailand. Soil suitability classes were performed using relevant factors and data essential for mung bean cultivation in 22 provinces in central Thailand. A decision support system was developed as soil map and mobile phone application using data based on soil suitability classes. Information of mung bean growth and yield grown in experimental fields with different soil suitability classes was used for preliminary validation. The main areas were very suitable (S1) and moderately suitable (S3) for mung bean plantation, accounting for 1,319,841 and 1,327,804 ha, respectively. The number of pods per plant and yield per plant of mung bean were higher in S1 areas (12.83–16.65 pods per plant and 8.35–12.43 g/plant, respectively) than in S3 areas. The mung bean yield was also greater in S1 areas (1613.8–2158.7 kg/ha) than in S3 areas (735.8–1138.6 kg/ha). The findings suggest the possibility of using developed decision support system.
