The high‑groundwater‑level coal mining areas have a long history of mining and are mainly located in east-central region of China. Subsidence caused by coal mining has several different periods. However, the subsidence change regularity in each periods remains unclear. This study aimed at revealing the subsidence change regularity in high‑groundwater‑level coal mining areas in different periods. Juye mining area was selected for the study, which located in Heze City, Shandong Province, China. Firstly, 54 Sentinel-1A radar satellite images from August 2018 to July 2020 were acquired for this research. The “two-track method” of D-InSAR technology was employed to process of images. Secondly, based on subsidence velocity of 1.7 mm/day, the subsidence process was divided into three periods: initial, active and weakening. Thirdly, elevation data of ground levelling points were used to check the accuracy of subsidence monitoring using Sentinel-1A data. At last, the subsidence change process in different periods was analyzed and the change regularity was summarized. The results are shown as follows: (1) The subsidence characteristics are not obvious in initial period. (2) The subsidence funnel begin to form and the mean maximum subsidence in center is greater than 1400 mm in active period. (3) The subsidence rate and volume gradually decrease and eventually stabilize in weakening period. The results can provide an important basis for land conservation in mining areas.

This paper presents an analysis of mining area deformations in the rock mass consisting of high depth and strength strata deposited in the cover. The analysis of land surveying results enabled the identification of the parameters required to predict subsidence, which differed from the typical parameters for the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The parameters of the Budryk–Knothe theory were determined based on the results of geodetic measurements. The calculations of the final state of deformations for planned mining were made using the average and characteristics for the study area parameter values. Based on experience, it is known that the range of subsidence trough depends on the mechanical properties of the rock mass. This study shows that the presence of high-strength rocks also reduces the value of the coefficient of roof control. Subsequently, calculations were made by a computer simulation of longwall mining to determine the course of indices of deformation over time. The calculations were conducted twice: on the assumption that the impact was immediate and on the assumption of the parameter values typical for the basin, and formula expressing the course of subsidence over time with the parameter values based on the measurement results. The obtained distributions of deformation indicators were diametrically opposed to each other. The results of the calculations with the parameter values appropriate for the region indicate that it is possible to carry out a planned mining operation without creating a risk to objects on the surface.

Salt deposits were a rich source of mineral resources in the past, and some are still mined today. However, salt mines, especially abandoned ones, pose a threat to populated areas, infrastructure and the natural environment. Solotvyno (Ukraine) is one of the most significantly affected areas, with a deformation zone where significant year-on-year subsidences occur. Mining activities have caused a disturbance of the balance in the mountain massif, and as a consequence, the mountains are being reshaped, and the land cover is deformed. Deformation zone of the historical salt mine Solotvyno (Ukraine), Tyachiv district of Zakarpattia region is situated on the right bank of the Tisza river in the border area with Romania in Central Europe. This paper deals with the multi-sensor monitoring of the active deformation zone over the Solotvyno salt mine using satellite radar data (Sentinel-1), optical satellite imagery (Pleiades, SPOT) and in-situ UAV photogrammetry. Since the area represents a significant geohazard from a hydrogeological (Tisza River) and civil security standpoints (infrastructure of the inhabited regions), the design of a high-precision monitoring system to monitor and evaluate current environmental changes is proposed. Multi-temporal InSAR analysis exposed steeper subsidence tendencies of >−2 cm in the central part of the monitored area. Optical satellite and UAV images confirmed the increase in water surface in sinkhole areas up to 28,500 m2 and proved the emergence of new sinkholes in the central part of the Solotvyno mine. The aim of this study is to describe the post-collapse deformation processes by Pleiades and SPOT multi-spectral sensors and Sentinel-1 satellite SAR sensors since the 2010 collapse in order to describe the trends of deformation due to undermining and propose a high-precision permanent monitoring system based on satellite radar interferometry (InSAR).
