“…Similar to western countries [ 44 , 45 ] and other third world countries [ 46 ], our article finds a positive impact of industrial land supply on environmental pollution. Some Chinese scholars studied the land misallocation on pollution [ 47 ], air quality [ 48 ], and its spatial spillover effects [ 49 ]. Zhao and Yan [ 50 ] studied the change of industrial land supply on environment in Chinese silk road cities.…”

“…This double second-hand land supply strategy fully utilizes the land's economic value and facilitates China's regional economy [1]. However, it has also significantly damaged the regional ecological environment (EEQ) through pathways such as strengthening extensive economic growth, inhibiting industrial structure upgrading and hindering technological innovation [2]. According to the Chinese Ecology and Environment Status Bulletin, 53.4% of 337 Chinese cities did not meet the annual air quality standard in 2019.…”

“…Numerous studies have shown that China's long-term non-market-based land transfer has caused unreasonable industrial land planning, inefficient land use and backward industrial structure. Thus, this has a direct negative impact on regional air pollution [2][3][4].…”

“…The marginal contributions of this paper are as follows: First, compared with previous studies on the in uencing factors of air pollution (He and Du, 2022), this paper answers the impact of land resource misallocation on air pollution from the perspective of production factors. Second, there are few previous studies on the mechanism and path of land resource misallocation and air pollution (Huang and Du, 2018;Liu et al, 2021a), this paper analyzed the impact mechanism of land resource misallocation on air pollution from three aspects: technological innovation, government technology input and foreign direct investment, enriching research on the mechanism and path of land resource misallocation on air pollution. Thirdly, different from the previous single regional heterogeneity analysis (Xu et al, 2022), this paper also analyzed the impact of land resource misallocation on air pollution under different city types and sizes, re ecting the heterogeneity of land policies and air governance in different cities.…”
