Land degradation along a climatic gradient in Mali: Farmers' perceptions of causes and impacts

Abstract: Land degradation (LD) in Mali is prevalent and leads to an enduring environmental and humanitarian crisis. Farmers' ecological knowledge has proven to be a valuable tool in addressing its challenges. How farmers perceive LD affects how they deal with induced risks, and their responses to these perceptions will shape restoration options and outcomes. Therefore, this study assessed farmers' perceptions of LD along a climatic gradient in three regions of Mali. We interviewed 270 farmers, and we analyzed their res… Show more

“…We conducted the widely used Mann-Kendall (MK) test method (Akinyemi, Ghazaryan, & Dubovyk, 2020;Gichenje & Godinho, 2018;Touré et al, 2020) to test the significance of the long-term trends in time series. In the MK trend test, the original hypothesis H o is that there are no trends; the alternative hypothesis is that there is a trend that could either be negative, positive, or nonnull (Mann, 1945).…”

“…We retrieved studies on disasters including droughts (Ndenyele and Badurdeen, 2012; Quandt, 2019), health crises (Davies and Bennett, 2016; Peacock et al, 2008), post-conflict situations and displacements (Ajayi, 2020; Borer, 2009; Stark et al, 2010), and war and armed conflict (Jacobson, 1999; Miller and Moskos, 1995; Sideris, 2003). Some of the papers involve crisis situations with no clearly identified intervention or external humanitarian actor (Hollander, 2014; Touré et al, 2020). Our dataset also includes theoretical engagements by scholars on the concepts of gender and humanitarian aid with regards to Africa.…”

“…There were gender determinants of beliefs about water pollution in Burkina Faso, for example, where women expressed a strong belief that pesticides cause deterioration of water quality (Diendéré et al, 2018). However, based on a study of a forested area in Kenya's rangelands, it appears as though interrogations of the nature of gendered relationships with land use have not always been simple (Westervelt, 2018); and perceptions of land degradation in Mali do not show gendered differences (Touré et al, 2020).…”
