Land Cover Changes from 1990 to 2019 in Papua, Indonesia: Results of the Remote Sensing Imagery

Abstract: Long-term land cover changes play a significant driver of ecosystem and function of natural biodiversity. Hence, their analysis can be used for evaluating and supporting government plans, especially conservation and management of natural habitats such as sago palm. In Papua Province of Indonesia, sago palm has been stated as one of the priority plants in the Medium-Term Development Plan (R.P.J.M.). However, limited studies have examined this palm in one of the Regencies of Papua Province, namely, Merauke Regen… Show more

“…Pairwise comparisons in the observed years (1990, 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2018) were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank nonparametric test (for non-categorical and not normally distributed data). Similarly, the forest and water body area changes were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for the years 1990-2006, 2006-2018, and 1990-2018. Gain, losses, the rate of forest area, and water body change [33,96] were calculated using the following Formula (1):…”

“…The province was able to achieve an annual index average of 97 points from 2012 to 2014, but the annual index average dropped to 79 points from 2015 to 2017 [15]. Aerial views of vegetation cover variations in Tanah Papua over the last 17 years [18,19] confirm what the Land Cover Quality Sub-index shows. The status of forest cover in 2001 was substantially different from the level of tree cover in 2017.…”

“…primary dry land forest, secondary dry land forest, primary mangrove forest, primary swamp forest, secondary mangrove forest, secondary swamp forest; (2) 15 classes of the non-forested area include swamp shrub, swamp, bush/rub, estate crop plantation, settlement area, barren land, clouds, grassland, water body, dry land agriculture, shrub mixed dry land, paddy field, fishpond, airport, transmigration area. According to the land cover classes of Indonesia [18], the forested area consists of primary and secondary dry land forest, primary and secondary mangrove, primary and secondary swamp forest. Further, cropland's classes are contained of estate cropland, pure and mixed dry agriculture, paddy field.…”

“…Even though different studies have been concerned with LUCC observation in Indonesia, the implementation of the remote sensing imagery in Papua Province is rarely done. Therefore, in the previous study, we were done to produce land use land cover maps in this Regency and the impact on the Sago palm was produced [18]. Hence, in present work we used Landsat imagery and supervised classification to evaluate the changes in land use types in the easternmost city in Indonesia.…”
