Indonesia grapples with land conversion, especially agricultural land. Paddy fields have shrunk from 8.4 million hectares in 1990 to 7.18 million in 2022, translating to a rate of more than 38 thousand hectares per year and yearly loss of around 140,000 hectares of potential rice production. This study aims to inform policymakers and stakeholders on achieving food security. Through a systematic literature review, the research explores factors like settlements, urbanization, and infrastructure development driving land conversion. These factors impact regions like Bali and Central Sumba, jeopardizing rice production. Understanding these challenges and opportunities is crucial for future solutions. Potential solutions include strengthening food security across the supply chain, regulating land conversion and ownership, and promoting government support, productivity enhancement, sustainable agriculture practices, and technological integration.

The Toddy palm (Borassuss flabellifer, L.) plays a role as a staple food for the Rotenese on Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara (ENT). Over decades, the national rice-bias policy in agricultural development has had an impact on changes in people’s food consumption, including Rotenese. The study aims to identify the Toddy palm’s changing area, a livelihood shift strategy related to those changes, and the economic and ecological support of toddy palm and rice crops for Rotenese’s livelihood. The methodology was a literature study and a survey with interviews of 15 toddy-rice farmers. The study revealed that farmers did not convert any toddy land because of expanding the rice area. Livelihood strategies are more carried out because of changes in farmers’ age than because of changes in land area. Changing was more on toddy’s product diversification. Toddy-rice crop farming has been proven to bring economic and ecological benefits to people on Rote Island. The decline in sap tappers numbers requires modern tapping technology to attract younger generations. The paper highlighted that it is important to maintain and preserve the toddy palm population/areas to guarantee food security and livelihoods for local communities that are highly dependent on it.

Analysis of Four Decades of Land Use and Land Cover Change in Semiarid Tunisia Using Google Earth Engine

Semiarid Tunisia is characterized by agricultural production that is delimited by water availability and degraded soil. This situation is exacerbated by human pressure and the negative effects of climate change. To improve the knowledge of long-term (1980 to 2020) drivers for Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes, we investigated the semiarid Rihana region in central Tunisia. A new approach involving Google Earth Engine (GEE) was used to map LULC using Landsat imagery and vegetative indices (NDVI, MSAVI, and EVI) by applying a Random Forest (RF) classifier. A Rapid Participatory Systemic Diagnosis (RPSD) was used to consider the relation between LULC changes and their key drivers. The methodology relied on interviews with the local population and experts. Focus groups were conducted with practicians of the Regueb Agricultural Extension Services, followed by semi-structured interviews with 52 households. Results showed the following: (1) the RF classifier in Google Earth Engine had strong performance across diverse Landsat image types resulting in overall classification accuracy of ≥0.96 and a kappa coefficient ≥0.93; (2) rainfed olive land increased four times during the study period while irrigated agriculture increased substantially during the last decade; rangeland and rainfed annual crops decreased by 58 and 88%, respectively, between 1980 and 2021; (3) drivers of LULC changes are predominately local in nature, including topography, local climate, hydrology, strategies of household, effects of the 2010 revolution, associated increasing demand for natural resources, agricultural policy, population growth, high cost of agricultural input, and economic opportunities. To summarize, changes in LULC in Rihana are an adaptive response to these various factors. The findings are important to better understand ways towards sustainable management of natural resources in arid and semiarid regions as well as efficient methods to study these processes.
