Land Cover Change and Food Security in Central Sumba: Challenge and Opportunity in the Decentralization Era in Indonesia

Abstract: This study focuses on land cover and land management changes in relation to food security and environmental services in a semi-arid area of East Nusa Tenggara (ENT) – Indonesia. The study was conducted in Central Sumba District of ENT Province. Classification and regression tree (CART) for land cover classification has been analyzed using machine learning techniques using Google Earth Engine. “…The physical changes and their impacts are summarized in Table 1.2. The major physical changes affecting the four types of land cover are those pertaining to settlements and dry land agriculture (Ngongo et al, 2023). Changes in residential land cover tend to have a negative impact because they convert agricultural land, such as rice fields, into settlements in the capital area of the Central Sumba district.…”

“…As most of the ENT region belongs to semi-arid and dryland, the forest areas in ENT are also under the dry-forest category and scattered into relatively small spots across the archipelago. The semi-arid area forms a unique ecosystem and biodiversity [2], which is essential for securing livelihoods, climate change adaptation, and food security [3,4]. They also provide important ecosystem services such as controlling erosion and preventing desertification.…”

“…It is prone to unfriendly agricultural and land management [11,12] and environmental changes [13]. Climate change and human activities can lead to a change in the aridity level in semi-arid areas and changes in the structure and functioning of dryland ecosystems [3,4]. Water availability is the most limited factor in farming, and the ecosystem is highly sensitive to land and farming management practices [14,15].…”
