‘Land Bandits’ or ‘Land Grabbers’: Fulani Herdsmen and Local Farmers Incessant Bloody Clashes in Nigeria

“…According to the International Crisis Group (2017, p.1), the persistent and escalated violent conflicts between the Fulani herdsmen from northern Nigeria and sedentary farming communities in central and southern regions is largely due to the Federal and State Government's poor "response to the crisis". According to Bamidele (2018), owing to the poor response by the Federal and State Governments in tackling the Fulani herdsmenfarmers conflicts, the situation continues to escalate with the armed Fulani herdsmen invading farming communities and leading to their cattle grazing on crops. “…The official narrative of the Nigerian Government describes the armed Fulani herdsmen activities as acts of banditry (Ojewale, 2021) and communal conflicts (Premium Times, 2018), which authorities seek to address by establishing grazing settlements and reserves for the herdsmen (Bamidele, 2018). This narrative seeks to accommodate the armed Fulani herdsmen by taking portions of land belonging to the farming communities and providing grazing routes and settlements for Fulani herdsmen for their business enterprise.…”

“…However, by identifying the group with such labels as "cutlass-wielding herdsmen" or "well-armed herdsmen" presents them as an armed violent group (Ajibefun, 2018;Ciboh 2017). In the same vein, a significant pattern of media representation is invasions of farms and subtle land grabbing tactics under the guise of cattle grazing (Bamidele 2018). Media reports tend to suggest that the main triggers of the increased clashes between farmers and nomads include trespassing on farmland.…”
