“…Biologists captured adult Pacific Lamprey (539 in 2013 and 910 in 2014) at mainstem dams on the middle or lower Columbia River for use in tribal restoration programs during latespring or summer (Ward et al 2012) of the year prior to testing. The tribe held the lamprey until the following year at the Minthorn Springs Holding Facility near Pendleton, Oregon (USA) in insulated tanks (3,028 L) at densities of approximately 60 kg per 1000 L (Moser et al 2019).…”

“…Adult lampreys migrate annually to spawn in shallow streams and rivers in and around North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia and are fairly easy to capture (Docker, 2015;McCauley et al, 2015;Potter et al, 2015). Captured sea lamprey can be held in tanks of circulating water maintained at temperatures that have been shown to promote spawning (∼18−20°C) (reviewed in Moser et al, 2019). When the animals are mature, gametes can be stripped manually and mixed in small bowls of water, with the resulting embryos being reared successfully at ∼18°C (Moser et al, 2019;Piavis, 1961;York et al, 2019).…”

“…Success of the control program has been attributed to use of barriers, traps, sterilization, and lampricides [ 14 , 15 ]. In Europe and North America, attempts to conserve and restore native lamprey populations have included dam removal [ 16 ] and artificial propagation [ 17 ]. In either case, strategies target individuals in life stages and habitats where they are most vulnerable to perturbations based on knowledge of species ecology and life history.…”
