During the last years, Intelligent Virtual Environments for Training have become a quite popular application of computer science to education. These systems involve very different technologies, ranging from computer graphics to artificial intelligence. However, little attention has been paid to software engineering issues, and most of these systems are developed in an ad-hoc way that does not allow the reuse of their components or an easy modification of the application, even though some authors claim that the use of agents makes systems be more modifiable. We describe two agent-based software architectures that are intended to be easily extended and modified. The first one was designed using an organizational approach recommended by some agent oriented methodologies. The second one is a redesign of the first architecture using more formal principles and methods of software architecture design. A comparison between both architectures highlights the need to use more formal approaches to design this kind of application, specially if we expect to achieve interchangeability of components between different applications.

ResumenEl objetivo de este documento es presentar una propuesta de un Sistema Inteligente de Tutoría para entrenamiento procedimental en un entorno virtual 2D/3D, capaz de mantener un diálogo en lenguaje natural basado en el contexto. De esta manera, cada alumno será capacitado por medio de un diálogo en lenguaje natural que tome en cuenta sus características específicas, su progreso en el desarrollo de la tarea y el entorno donde se realiza la tarea. Por lo tanto, la retroalimentación de tutoría será el resultado de un diálogo adaptado al contexto. Para dar soporte al diálogo, se utilizará un gestor de diálogo, construido sobre alguna de las plataformas conocidas para la creación de gestores de diálogo actualmente disponibles. AbstractIn order to provide support environments for education, the aim of this paper is to present a proposal for an Intelligent Tutoring System for procedural training in a 2D / 3D virtual environment, capable of maintaining a dialogue in natural language based on the context. In this way, each student will be trained through a dialogue in natural language that takes into account the students' specific characteristics, their progress in the development of the task and the environment where the task is performed. This report describes the development of a teaching environment that uses agents to support learning. An Intelligent Tutoring System will be described, that guides students during learning. This system is meant for nurse education in the first place, but it is generic in the sense that the core is separated from the exercise modules and user interfaces. This means that the system can also be used for other (non-nursing) exercises. Exercises can be provided to the system in the form of XML data-files. A user interface can be text-based or 2D, but it can also be a 3D virtual reality environment. An application of the teaching environment for nurse training is described.
