Laft atrial mechanical function in patients with essentiel hypertension

Abstract: The results of the present study indicate that chronic hypertension is associated with an increased in left atrial volumes, a decrease in left atrial passive emptying function, and an increase systolic pump function. Increased left atrial pump function represents a compensatory mechanism in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy.

“…Chronic hypertension is associated with an increase in LA pump function (4,15). Augmented LA booster pump function is one of the mechanisms compensating for decreased early filling in patients with reduced left ventricular compliance, whereas a loss of atrial contraction, as a result of atrial fibrillation, reduces cardiac output by approximately 15-20% (20).…”

“…Recently there have been multiple studies of phasic left atrial function using either Doppler flow or echocardiographic changes in left atrial area and volume during the cardiac cycle [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. These investigations have reported that the relative contribution of the components of phasic left atrial function to left ventricular filling are affected by several factors including age, [2][3][4][5] hypertension [6][7] and left ventricular dysfunction [8][9][10]. A smaller number of studies, primarily using conventional or tissue Doppler imaging, have shown that right atrial active emptying is also affected by some of these factors with an increase in right atrial pump function reported in the elderly [3,[11][12][13][14] and pulmonary arterial hypertension patients [15][16].…”

“…39 Increased left atrial pump function represents a compensatory mechanism in hypertensive patients with LVH. The LVH regression observed by Mattioli et al 27 in hypertensive patients treated with telmisartan for 1 year also brought about a reduction in left atrial size and volume, and improvement in atrial performance.…”
