Lactobacillus plantarum (VR1) isolated from an Ayurvedic medicine (Kutajarista) ameliorates in vitro cellular damage caused by Aeromonas veronii

Abstract: BackgroundLactobacillus plantarum is considered as a safe and effective probiotic microorganism. Among various sources of isolation, traditionally fermented foods are considered to be rich in Lactobacillus spp., which can be exploited for their probiotic attribute. Antibacterial property of L. plantarum has been demonstrated against various enteric pathogens in both in vitro and in vivo systems. This study was aimed at characterizing L. plantarum isolated from Kutajarista, an ayurvedic fermented biomedicine, a… Show more

“…When bile salts were added (small intestine digestion), no significant differences were found ( P = 0.60) between short and long digestions, as slight decreases (about 0.1 log unit reduction for short digestion and about 0.2 log unit reduction for the long digestion) were found for both micro‐organisms. All the strains from the studies mentioned above showed high survival rates after the addition of 0.3% (w/v) of bile salts (Kumar et al ., ; Abbasiliasi et al ., ; KaborĂ© et al ., ).…”

“…Tolerance of the isolates to bile salts and simulated gastric juice was assayed as described by Kumar et al . . For the bile tolerance test, MRS broth was supplemented with 0.3% (w/v) bile salts (oxgall; Himedia, Mumbai, India).…”

“…isolated from alcoholic fermentation of raffia wine has been examined for its immune stimulation activity in mouse model [7]. Previously, we have also reported probiotic attributes of Lactobacillus plantarum isolated from similar sources [15]. At 8 day of fermentation, presence of Streptococcus and Bacillus spp., indicated vigorous stage of fermentation, and reported to have pectinlolytic activity [12,26].…”
