Lactobacillus plantarum TW1-1 Alleviates Diethylhexylphthalate-Induced Testicular Damage in Mice by Modulating Gut Microbiota and Decreasing Inflammation

Abstract: Diethylhexylphthalate (DEHP), acting as an endocrine disruptor, disturbed reproductive health. Here, we evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum TW1-1 ( L. plantarum TW1-1) on DEHP-induced testicular damage in adult male mice. Results showed that oral supplementation of L. plantarum TW1-1 significantly increased the serum testosterone concentration, enhanced the semen quality, and attenuated gonad development defects in DEHP-exposed m… Show more

“…At the genus level, Prevotella and Bacteroidales were negatively associated with testicular function, while Paraprevotella, Mucispirillum, Oscillospira, Coprococcus and Lactobacillus were positively correlated with that function. 63 , 68 JL-3 pretreatment reduced the increase of Prevotella and Bacteroidales , and elevated the decrease of Paraprevotella, Mucispirillum, Oscillospira and Lactobacillus in UA-exposed mice by regulating intestinal flora and improving intestinal function to alleviate gout. 62 , 63 In addition, the low abundance inherent strain of Erysipelatoclostridium that appears in a host colitis by competing for nutrients negatively affected the flora.…”

“…For example, the amount of SOD and glutathione in weanling piglets could increase due to L. fermentum administration, with the enhanced capacity to inhibit O 2 •− formation in muscle and liver, which can contribute to the modulation of oxidative stress in relevant organs [ 117 ]. Recent research also reported the preventive capacity of a L. plantarum strain, administered orally, on Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP)-induced testicular damage in mice [ 118 ]. In addition, few oxidative stresses-induced cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome may be alleviated by Lactobacillus spp.…”

“…Besides, the decreased abundance of Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group was also observed in hydrocortisone-induced depressant rats [ 10 ]. Lactobacillus , a pivotal component of the Firmicutes phylum, usually affects the immune system [ 70 ]. Lactobacillus plantarum TW1-1 , isolated from a fermented milk product, was reported to modulate gut microbiota and have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative stress activities [ 70 ].…”
