Lactobacillus plantarum GX17 benefits growth performance and improves functions of intestinal barrier/intestinal flora among yellow-feathered broilers

Abstract: Lactobacillus plantarum has recently been found to be a natural source feed additive bacteria with great advantages in food safety and animal welfare. Discovering novel strains with commercial application potentiation could benefit the local poultry industry, and in particular support Chinese farmers. In this study, we tested a recently isolated novel strain of Lactobacillus plantarum GX17 as a feed additive on the growth performance and intestinal barrier functions of 1-day-old Chinese yellow-feather chicks. … Show more

“…In this study, dietary supplementation with Lactobacillus plantarum HW1 could increase the villus height and V/C value of broilers under necrotic enteritic challenge, indicating that dietary supplementation with Lactobacillus plantarum HW1 could protect small intestinal villi from the damage of necrotic enteritis, thus promoting the digestion and absorption of intestinal villi and improving the production performance in broilers. Similar results were found in studies by Yin et al [36] and Wu et al [37].…”

“…Roseburia has been shown to have the ability to utilize sugars and produce butyrate [62]. Lactobacillus has been considered one of the most important intestinal beneficial bacteria due to its positive regulatory effect on the intestinal barrier and mucosal immunity [63,64]. Moreover, Lactobacillus has also been reported to improve host growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and digestive enzyme activity [63,65].…”

“…Lactobacillus plantarum belongs to the Lactobacillus genus of the phylum Firmicutes , and is commonly used in fermented foods, due to its numerous health benefits. Experimental studies have confirmed the beneficial effects of Lactobacillus plantarum in decreasing blood lipid levels, and regulating the intestinal flora [ 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 ]. These effects include immunomodulatory properties, lower levels of ALT and AST, the inhibition of pathogenic bacteria proliferation, decreased serum cholesterol levels, and the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.…”
