Lactobacillus GG and acute diarrhoea in young children in the tropics

Abstract: A prospective, placebo controlled, triple blind clinical trial was undertaken in Thailand to determine the effect of Lactobacillus GG on recovery from acute diarrhoea in children. Thirty-nine children (mean age = 8 months) were enrolled and following rehydration received either oral Lactobacillus GG (n = 20) as a freeze-dried preparation or placebo (n = 19) twice daily for 2 days. The clinical characteristics of the study groups were similar. There was no significant difference overall in clinical response det… Show more

“…In RCTs investigating their therapeutic efficacy, they have been generally used in association with ORS (293). In RTCs, L. rhamnosus GG alone or in combination with ORS has demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in significantly reducing by at least half the duration of acute diarrhea mainly resulting from rotavirus infection in children (296)(297)(298)(299)(300)(301)(302)(303)(304)(305)(306)(307)(308)(309)(310). Two meta-analyses have been conducted to specifically examine the RCTs conducted with L. rhamnosus GG (311,312).…”

“…Lactobacillus strains have been investigated for their probiotic activity in gut and vaginal environments. Treatment with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, for instance, results in improved recovery from and reduces the incidence of diarrhea compared to placebo (249,271,336). Additionally, strains of L. rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri improved treatment rates of bacterial vaginosis in women who were given metronidazole treatment compared to women who received metronidazole and a placebo (16).…”

“…Pharmaceutical products made from such probiotic bacteria have been clinically employed to ameliorate diarrheal symptoms through stabilizing gut microflora. For example, Lactobacillus GG was protective in acute infantile diarrhea (13) and pseudomembranous post-antibiotic colitis (20) in humans. When we look into animal models, many invasive strains of bacteria are also attenuated by probiotic microorganisms.…”
