Obtaining reliable and representative mushroom production data requires time-consuming sampling schemes. In this paper, we assessed a simple methodology to detect mushroom emergence by trapping the fungal spores of the fruiting body community in plots where mushroom production was determined weekly. We compared the performance of filter paper traps with that of funnel traps and combined these spore trapping methods with species-specific quantitative real-time PCR and Illumina MiSeq to determine the spore abundance. Significantly more MiSeq proportional reads were generated for both ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungal species using filter traps than were obtained using funnel traps. The spores of 37 fungal species that produced fruiting bodies in the study plots were identified. Spore community composition changed considerably over time due to the emergence of ephemeral fruiting bodies and rapid spore deposition (lasting from 1 to 2 weeks), which occurred in the absence of rainfall events. For many species, the emergence of epigeous fruiting bodies was followed by a peak in the relative abundance of their airborne spores. There were significant positive relationships between fruiting body yields and spore abundance in time for five of seven fungal species. There was no relationship between fruiting body yields and their spore abundance at plot level, indicating that some of the spores captured in each plot were arriving from the surrounding areas. Differences in fungal detection capacity by spore trapping may indicate different dispersal ability between fungal species. Further research can help to identify the spore rain patterns for most common fungal species.IMPORTANCE Mushroom monitoring represents a serious challenge in economic and logistical terms because sampling approaches demand extensive field work at both the spatial and temporal scales. In addition, the identification of fungal taxa depends on the expertise of experienced fungal taxonomists. Similarly, the study of fungal dispersal has been constrained by technological limitations, especially because the morphological identification of spores is a challenging and time-consuming task. Here, we demonstrate that spores from ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungal species can be identified using simple spore traps together with either MiSeq fungus-specific amplicon sequencing or species-specific quantitative real-time PCR. In addition, the proposed methodology can be used to characterize the airborne fungal community and to detect mushroom emergence in forest ecosystems.

The use of marketed mushrooms is predicted to increase worldwide. Currently, the marketed mushroom yields in Finland remain largely unutilized, and forest management mainly aims at timber production. In this thesis, the availability and limitations of the raw material procurement and market supply of marketed mushrooms in Eastern Finland were studied. Empirical yield models were formulated for the most marketed species in spruce stands: cep (Boletus edulis), milk cap (Lactarius spp.) and all marketed mushrooms. Optimal stand management was defined for the joint production of timber and mushrooms. The socially acceptable limits for mushroom picking on private land were investigated through a forest owner survey, and the supply of marketed mushrooms was modeled to study which factors affect the marketed quantities of mushrooms in Eastern Finland. The results suggest that the Eastern Finnish spruce stands produced their highest mushroom yields right before the first commercial thinning, and precipitation during the yield season promoted the yields. The production of timber and marketed mushrooms was largely in synergy, and if mushrooms are picked for sale, the total soil expectation value (SEV) in good mushroom stands can be remarkable. The forest owners in Eastern Finland expressed some restriction needs for organized commercial picking, but they were otherwise content with the everyman's rights regarding mushroom picking. The supply of marketed mushrooms was affected by biological and economic factors; precipitation had a positive influence on cep and milk cap supplies and market price negatively impacted the supplies of ceps and chanterelles. The results contribute to a more stable and sustainable raw material supply to the mushroom supply chains by providing novel information on the supply of marketed mushrooms and limits of socially acceptable mushroom picking and by developing concrete tools to integrate mushroom production into forest management planning and to plan for mushroom picking.

Fungal fruit-bodies are an important economic resource both for recreational pickers and commercial markets. The broad interest in forest fungi and mushrooms has motivated attempts to develop appropriate silvicultural methods able to preserve and improve mushroom yields. Defining best practices for the sustainability and profitability of forest fungal resources is the main aim of 'mycosilviculture'. However, the difficulty of monitoring and studying such a cryptic kingdom (i.e., fungi) under real forest conditions has led to rather scattered scientific knowledge of the effects of forest management regimes and silvicultural operations on wild mushroom resources. Here, we review the current scientific literature regarding the influence of (i) stand characteristics, i.e. stand age, stand density, canopy cover and tree species composition, (ii) silvicultural practices and (iii) other management-related disturbances affecting the yield of wild epigeous mushrooms, with the aim of systematizing existing scientific knowledge and identifying gaps in knowledge in order to suggest 2 future lines of research. Most of the research in the field of mycosilviculture to date has focused on ectomycorrhizal mushrooms, which include the majority of wild commercial mushrooms. The main findings from the literature indicate that forest management practices, by modifying stand characteristics and microclimatic conditions, can influence wild mushroom occurrence and productivity, both positively and negatively, depending on the specific fungal ecological needs, reproductive strategies, forest type and management regime. Further research efforts relating to all aspects of the interaction between forest management, fungal ecology and mushroom production are needed: in particular, additional research efforts should be devoted to understanding mushroom yield dynamics in uneven-aged and mixed forests and evaluating the effects of regeneration methods on fungal communities.
