Lacrimal Duct Cyst Abscess

Abstract: Cystic dilatation within the lacrimal gland is thought to be related to chronic inflammation and scarring of the lacrimal gland ductules. We review the literature and discuss a case and of lacrimal duct cyst suppuration presenting with visual loss, external ophthalmoplegia, proptosis and ptosis. To our knowledge, only one other report of a lacrimal ductal cyst abscess has been reported in the literature so far.

“…After examining the causative bacteria through culture tests, choosing and treating susceptible antibiotics are critical. 14 This case showed more severe clinical manifestations compared to the typical clinical manifestations of lacrimal gland ductal cysts, as reported by Eifig et al 4 and Dharmasena et al, 10 but completely resolved with medical treatment without surgical treatment. It is thought that identifying MRSA through culture tests and selecting and treating susceptible antibiotics accordingly are key to the successful treatment.…”

“…11 In cases of inflammation or infection, it has been reported that in addition to surgical treatment, antibiotic eye drops and oral or intravenous antibiotic treatment is required. 10 In conclusion, in this case, based on orbital computed tomography findings, intravenous antibiotics and steroid treatment were performed because of suspected lacrimal gland ductal cyst infection presenting as acute orbital cellulitis with an abscess. Symptoms resolved without any surgical treatment, and MRSA bacteria were identified in pus, resulting in a final diagnosis of lacrimal gland ductal cyst infection.…”
