Lacrimal diverticula

Abstract: Lacrimal diverticula are outpouchings of the lacrimal drainage system. They are suspected clinically by the presence of an intermittent or permanent swelling near the lacrimal sac, which can be emptied, by compression, into the lacrimal system and by patency on irrigation of this system. A series of 12 cases of lacrimal diverticula managed in our department is presented. Five patients underwent a simple dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) with or without intubation, two had a DCR and excision of the diverticulum and t… Show more

“…Ventromedial canthal cysts in close proximity to the inferior lacrimal canaliculus of the left eye were reported in four young Labrador retrievers by Ota et al. 3 and Gerding; 5 however, cysts of the lacrimal canaliculus are rare in both dogs and humans 5,11–13 . In both species, all the reported cases have involved the inferior canaliculus 5,12,13 .…”

“…The diverticulum compresses the canal system causing a trapdoor‐type blockage and allows the endonasal cystic development. A congenital predisposition due to the presence of a diverticulum seems to be possible in our adult dog although it is difficult to confirm with certainty that the lesion was acquired, as in humans, diverticula are often asymptomatic …”

“…In humans, reported cases of canaliculocele are very rare and have involved the inferior canaliculus, the common canaliculus, that is, the common part of the two canaliculi before the lacrimal sac and the upper canaliculus …”

“…The masses consisted of two to three lobules extending along the inferior orbital rim and the nasolacrimal canal in both cases and extending to the lacrimal sac fossa in one case. Despite a report of a diverticulum that grew into the inferior orbital rim, most diverticulae arise in the lateral wall of the lacrimal sac as a single pouch [4,5]. The inferior part of the lateral wall is the most vulnerable site for diverticulum since the medial wall is surrounded by the periosteum, and the superior portion of the lacrimal sac is enforced by the orbicularis muscles and the medial canthal tendon.…”
