Lack of validity of a French adaptation of a scale measuring attitudes towards clinical practice guidelines

Abstract: This scale does not have satisfactory psychometric properties and therefore cannot confidently be used in future research assessing whether attitudes towards guidelines are a determining factor in physicians' compliance with guidelines. More research is needed to develop valid scales in a more rigorous procedure, involving qualitative and quantitative steps.

“…However, to date, such factors still remain difficult to assess. 32 As noticed in previous studies conducted in patients with stroke 33 or coronary artery disease, 34 we found that inhospital initiation of preventive therapies was associated with higher treatment rates during follow-up and consequently with better risk factors control. Such a strategy may theoretically help to alleviate patients' concerns regarding side effects, conveys the message that therapies are essential for Between stroke and inclusion Between inclusion and the 6-month visit Between the 6-and 12-month visits > _ Figure 3.…”

“…Research has suggested that global self‐rating of health items varies by race and education [19]. Translating and adapting a questionnaire developed in one country for use in another is not always successful [20]. Semantics differ, as well as expectations and norms.…”

“…For example, a tool developed by experts to measure attitudes toward clinical practice guidelines [45] was subsequently found to have poor internal construct validity when translated into French and used in another group of practitioners. [46] The survey tool we used was initially derived empirically from research to identify barriers perceived by physicians to use of practice guidelines and underwent preliminary psychometric testing. [12] In this study, we further modified the instrument based on a factor analysis.…”
