Lack of Time is the Consistent Barrier to Physical Activity and Exercise in 18 to 64 year-old Males and Females from both South Carolina and Southern Ontario

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast Southern Ontarian and South Carolinian adults to examine adults' psychological, lack of time and physical barriers to PA and exercise. We also sought to determine whether any gender differences existed in the identification of prominent barriers to PA. “…Although detailed information regarding types and intensities of PA was not included in the KCIS data, previous surveys have shown that about half of Taiwan's residents engage in strolling and brisk walking ( 18 , 19 ). Lower PA times may be perceived as easier goals both to set and to achieve, given that lack of time has been found to be an important barrier to individuals engaging in PA ( 20 ).…”

“…Lack of time is one the most reported perceived barriers to PA in adults. 24,82,110 Only one environmental factor (hilly environment) demonstrated a significant correlation with PA and was consistently negatively associated across the four studies examining this factor. In comparison, a review of reviews in adults without overweight/obesity reported inconclusive association between PA and hilly terrain.…”

“…Of the significant negative correlates identified, lack of time as a barrier is not unique to this cohort. Lack of time is one the most reported perceived barriers to PA in adults 24,82,110 . Considered to be an external, but modifiable barrier, time constraints are another factor that warrants consideration during the design of interventions to promote PA.…”

“…Lack of time, either perceived or actual, is a consistent barrier to engaging in regular physical activity for adults aged 18 to 64 (17). Digital fitness can be used anywhere — at-home options effectively reduce the time needed to participate in an exercise session by removing a commute and navigating a busy facility.…”
