Lack of association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and cervical human papillomavirus infection in systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Our objective was to evaluate whether vitamin D deficiency is associated with cervical human papilloma virus (HPV) infection in women with SLE. This is a cross-sectional study of 67 women with SLE. A structured questionnaire was administered to ascertain the possible risk factors associated with cervical HPV infection. A gynaecological evaluation and cervical cytology screening were made. HPV detection and genotyping was made by PCR and linear array assay. Serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels were quantified by ch… Show more

“…11 In a previous study, we found no association between HPV infection and vitamin D deficiency in SLE patients. 14 In the present study, the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was corroborated, but no association between vitamin D levels and HPV persistence or clearance was found in Mexican SLE patients.…”

“…In the 2011 review,3 five studies reported on the increased prevalence of HPV cervical infection in female patients with SLE compared with the general population 64 65. The present review has significantly expanded the knowledge on the genital HPV infection in SLE (n=11),66–76 RA (n=2)69 77 and SSc (n=1), including 1313 patients altogether78 (table 4). Most studies on the SLE population were conducted in Latin America (n=9), followed by Asia (n=2).…”

“…The authors suggested that using a very sensitive technique of PCR (n-PCR) might have resulted in a significant increase in the detection of the virus 70. Seven studies also reported the prevalence of cervical dysplasia, including the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HGSILs) 67–70 72 76 77. The pooled prevalence of HPV and pooled prevalence and prevalence ratios of HPV, high-risk HPV and HGSIL are summarised in table 2 in the supplementary file and depicted in figure 3.…”

“…According to a study examining 2353 sexually active women, HPV prevalence was associated with VD deficiency [177] (Table 5). However, in contrast to this, Garcia-Carrasco et al found no association between VD deficiency and the development of cervical cancers in 67 HPV-positive women with systemic lupus erythematosus [178].…”
