Lack of association between intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) polymorphisms and polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: These preliminary results suggest that the 241 and 469 SNPs of ICAM-1 gene may not be risk factors for PCOS. Further studies with a larger cohort, analyzing other ICAM-1 polymorphisms are necessary to support our observations before any statement can be made about the relationship between PCOS and ICAM-1 polymorphisms.

“…Some evidence suggests that low-grade chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS 16 and insulin resistance. 17 In this study, we aimed to establish whether progesterone replacement suffices to maintain the endometrium in patients with PCOS in an appropriate state together with the elements that are known to influence the maternal-fetal interaction during the implantation window.…”

“…9 Ojeda-Ojeda et al 10 demonstrated that ICAM1 common variant K469E was strongly associated with polycystic ovary syndrome in Spain, but it was not a risk factor for polycystic ovary syndrome in other ethnic groups. 11 Furthermore, our recent study is another example of differential association of common variants with a disease in different ethnic backgrounds, an example being MTHFR polymorphism c.677C.T. 12 This variant has been associated with gastroschisis in our population, but it has not shown an effect on gastroschisis in white individuals.…”

“…We did not find an association between Ser128Arg polymorphisms and the risk of developing PCOS in the present sudy, indicating that these polymorphisms alone may not play a major role in the PCOS etiopathogenesis. In addition, we reported recently the lack of association between intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1) and vascular adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) polymorphisms with PCOS [38,39]. However, the VCAM1 -1591 polymorphism was found to be related with increased triglyceride and decreased HDL-C in PCOS, supporting increased risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease in PCOS women [39].…”
