Lack of Association between Glaucoma and Macular Choroidal Thickness Measured with Enhanced Depth-Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: Choroidal thickness does not differ among normal, NTG, and POAG subjects, suggesting a lack of relationship between choroidal thickness and glaucoma based on EDI OCT measurements.

“…It has been reported that CT was negatively correlated with older age, longer AL, higher IOP, and thicker CCT. [20][21][22][23][24] In our study, multiple linear regression analysis showed that the SFCT was significantly associated with only the change in IOP. This may be due to the change in IOP, which was the most marked factor after surgery.…”

“…48 Contrary to previous suggestions, however, we have not found that baseline CT is related to the degree of glaucoma injury, 14 a finding corroborated by another report. 49 Our data show measurable differences between AC and OA eyes in both baseline CT and dynamic choroidal behavior during the WDT. CT was greater at baseline in AC eyes, possibly related to the known relation between smaller eyes and a thicker choroid.…”

“…OCT measurements were obtained according to previously published methodology (20) . In brief, spectral domain OCT scans were performed in the macular region using a single, 30°, linear scan centered on the fovea.…”

“…A correlation between WDT results and progression of glaucoma has also been demonstrated (14,15) . The choroid has been studied due to its potential role in the pa thogenesis (16) of glaucoma, with several authors attempting to determine the relationship between glaucoma and CT (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22) . De Moraes et al (21) described an increase in CT during the WDT in a group of glaucomatous patients, which may partly explain observed increases in IOP following water ingestion.…”
