Laccase-Mediator Biobleaching Applied to a Direct Yellow Dyed Paper

Abstract: A laccase-mediator system (LMS) for biobleaching was applied to a bleached chemical pulp dyed with stilbene dye Direct Yellow 11. Of mediators tested, 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) was found to be more effective than either violuric acid (VA) or N-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT), which had been shown to be superior to ABTS when bleaching virgin chemical pulp. The laccase-ABTS system removed more than 60% of the color.

“…The sulfur species act as electron mediators between AQ and lignin macromolecules. Electron mediators play an essential role in enzymatic delignifi cation of lignocellulosic materials (Bourbonnais et al 1997 ;Kutnson and Ragauskas 2004 ). The present paper confi rms the mediator concept, as similar EGs were observed for commercial AQ, linear hydrophobic CP-B and crosslinked CP-3D polymers, showing that neither steric hindrance nor solubility were a limiting factor for catalysis in the presence of sodium sulfi de.…”

“…The laccase/ABTS system developed for treatment of Direct Yellow 11 (Knutson & Ragauskas 2004) was tested for its ability to decolorize Basazol 46L dye. Since laccase uses O 2 as an electron source, the solution concentration of O 2 was increased by performing the reaction with stirring under 1000 kPa O 2 pressure.…”

“…The development of a laccase mediator system utilizing 2, 2¢-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonate), ABTS, as mediator to decolorize pulp dyed with Direct Yellow 11 has been recently reported (Knutson & Ragauskas 2004). This study examines the relative reaction rates for laccase/ ABTS and soybean peroxidase biobleaching.…”

“…This is an unfinished search, as there is still no suitable mediator for the different applications of the LMSs. Synthetic organic compounds (Claus et al 2002;Knutson and Ragauskas 2004), lignin-derived compounds , compounds naturally produced by fungi (Johannes and Majcherczyk 2000), phenolic compounds (Kang et al 2002) and polyoxometalates (Gamelas et al 2005) have all been tested in different applications as mediators in LMSs.…”
