“…Field observations of the predatory behaviour of diving beetles have been carried out by, for example, SAILER & LIENK (1954), KÜHLHORN (1961), JAMES (1965), LEE (1967), ROBERTS et al (1967) and YOUNG (1967). Results of studies based on the analysis of the content of intestines or proventriculi are also available.…”

“…It has been shown by field and laboratory observations that members of the following taxa: Dytiscidae (Service, 1973a(Service, , 1977Roberts et al, 1967), Hydrophilidae (Notestine, 1971), Hemiptera (James, 1965), Muscidae (Service, 1971), Empididae (Service, 1973c), Amphibia (tadpoles) (Service, 1970) can be important and active predators of mosquitoes.…”

“…Using this method, Nelson (1977) found that the larvae of Dytiscus marginalis L. were consistently more effective than those of the hydrophilid Hydrophilus triangularis Say in regulating the larval population of C. quinquefasciatus Say. Roberts et al (1967) also compared the predation potential of two adult dytiscids, Laccophilus fasciatus Aube andL. maculosus (Germar), on various larval instarsof C. pipiens and the chironomid Glyptotendipes barbipes (Staeger), finding that the predation potential of the two beetles was the same for third and fourth instars of C. pipiens, but that L. fasciatus appeared to be a more efficient predator of G. barbipes for both sizes of larva.…”
