Laboratory investigation of pore pressure dissipation in clay around permeable piles

Abstract: Excess pore-water pressures induced by pile driving could have a detrimental effect on a project, especially on the construction sequence and ground settlement. Measures that can effectively accelerate dissipation of pore pressures are therefore valuable. One way to reduce the pore pressure is the use of permeable piles. This paper presents a series of model-scale laboratory tests conducted on piles with drainage holes around the pile circumference. It is found that permeable piles could accelerate soil consol… Show more

“…Different preloading techniques, including electro‐osmosis preloading, vacuum preloading, and surcharge preloading, have been employed to accelerate the consolidation process. Vertical drainage channels are often included in the soil, such as the use of prefabricated vertical drains, sand drains, stone columns, pervious concrete piles, and permeable pipe piles . Horizontal drains can also be sandwiched between clayey soils to minimize the drainage distance and improve the consolidation efficiency …”

“…Vertical drainage channels are often included in the soil, such as the use of prefabricated vertical drains, 37-39 sand drains, 40 stone columns, 41 pervious concrete piles, 42 and permeable pipe piles. 43,44 Horizontal drains can also be sandwiched between clayey soils to minimize the drainage distance and improve the consolidation efficiency. [45][46][47][48][49][50] A schematic illustration is depicted in Figure 5 to show how horizontal drains can be implemented between clayey soils, where the layered clay-drain reclamation experiences a combined self-weight and surcharge preloading consolidation following the original work of Tan et al 26 In the designated land reclamation area, a horizontal drain is laid once the filled soil reaches a certain elevation, after which the hydraulic filling process of dredged soils is continued.…”

“…Thus far, most of the new types of piles [6,19,20] used for soft foundations have achieved good results in experimental research, but they have few applications in practical engineering. This is also true for VDP piles, and the current research mainly focuses on laboratory tests.…”

“…In recent years, the axially loaded piles have attracted attention of many scholars. For axially loaded piles, various methods have been used, including field tests [1][2][3] and laboratory tests [4][5][6][7]. For the field tests, Zhang et al [8] examined the influence of the press pile on material strength, which can have positive impact on mobilizing the shaft resistance [9].…”

“…erefore, the bearing capacity of the soil has a great influence on the pile foundation, especially the vibration that is generated by an earthquake [21]. When an earthquake occurs, soft soils may be subjected to disfiguration [22], which can reduce the serviceability of the structure; meanwhile, the pile displacement accumulation [23] may result in damage to existing piles [5]. e pulling pile is quite different from the uplift pile that an uplift pile limits the displacement of the pile [17], whereas the pulling pile is to pull the pile out from the strata completely.…”
