Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a medicinal species of Lamiaceae family, popularly known for its multiple benefits and high levels of volatile compounds. The species is considered to be one of the most essential oil producing plants. Also cultivated in Brazil as a condiment plant in home gardens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salinity on the growth of basil in nutrient solution of Furlani and to identify variables related to the salinity tolerance in this species. The first assay was performed with variation of five saline levels (0 -control, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mM NaCl). In the second assay six genotypes were evaluated in two salinity levels 0 and 80 mM NaCl. The height, stem diameter, number of leaves, dry mass and inorganic solutes in different organs, photosynthetic pigments, absolute membrane integrity and relative water content were evaluated. All biometric variables in basil were significantly reduced by salinity. Dry matter yield and percentage of membrane integrity were the variables that best discriminated the characteristics of salinity tolerance among the studied basil genotypes. Basil genotypes showed a differentiated tolerance among the genotypes, the 'Toscano folha de alface' being considered as the most tolerant and 'Gennaro de menta' as the most sensitive, among the species studied.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of potassium, boron and zinc rates on the growth of kenaf. Seeds of two kenaf varieties namely; FH-952 and 4383 variety were planted on 26 September 2013. Plant growth was determined for both varieties. The growth characteristics which consist of plant height, stem diameter and leaf number were measured every two weeks for five times consecutively. The best result was achieved for both characteristics; stem diameter and leaf number for FH-952 variety when potassium and boron added at rates of 150 and 1.5 kg/ha, respectively except plant height was better when potassium was at the same rate while boron and zinc were controlled. The results showed a significant impression on the kenaf growth. It would be apposite to choose better varieties of kenaf for the production purpose with using better controlling of macro and micronutrients.

The objective of this study was to investigate the response of local tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller) seedlings growth on media containing grass and spent mushroom compost in the nursery. The grass compost (GC) was produced by Research Center for Biotechnology-LIPI. Whereas the spent oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) compost (OC) and spent paddy straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) compost (PC) were produced by Research Center for Biology-LIPI. Growing media of tomato seedling was a mixture of top soil (TS), rice husk charcoal (HC), grass compost (GC), spent oyster mushroom compost (OC) and spent paddy straw mushroom compost (PC) in the ratio of 1:1 as follows: TS+HC, TS+HC+GC, TS+HC+OC and TS+HC+PC. The experiments were arranged in Completely Randomized Design with three replications. Growth parameters observed i.e. seedling growth, dry weight production and leaf indices. Results showed that growing medium containing spent paddy straw mushroom compost was the best to improve seedlings growth in general. However, the lowest specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR) indices were obtained by the seedlings on the medium without compost. Correlation analysis showed that highest correlations were recorded for the TS+HC+OC medium. The tomato seedling growth was improved on the media containing compost in general.
