“…On the basis of their data, the students decide which calibration method gives the most accurate results and use that method to subsequently measure [Cl – ] in two water samples that they supply. Similar experiments have been published previously. Anecdotally, we have seen that the ISE experiment is one of the most challenging for students conceptually and mathematically. Prior to this experiment, students in this course typically have not used an ISE or prepared a standard addition calibration curve.…”

“…Students seldom consider ionic compounds (such as ammonium nitrate) as solvents because of their higher melting point. This experiment, however, creates new experimental difficulties such as (1) keeping electrodes hot enough so the eutectic mixture inside them does not solidify and (2) the cleaning of the electrodes without using water. Fourth, the students will gain experience in electrometric measurements of elevated temperature.…”

“…Since the turn of the century, the glass membrane potential has been of considerable interest, both theoretically and practically. Most of the teaching has stressed the analytical application of the potential and few attempts are made at teaching the theory upon which the operations of ion selective glass electrodes is based (1). Even when the theory is presented in class, there are usually no experimental procedures which demonstrate them (2).…”

“…Brief chapters on the theory of various types of ISE have appeared in some modern textbooks of analytical chemistry and chemical instrumentation. Compared with other branches of chemical instrumentation, articles describing student laboratory experiments on the construction and applications of several types of ISE are very limited (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Survey articles published recently show that it is important for the students of chemistry and related sciences to participate in ISE laboratory experiments (8) because of their increasing use for analysis, process and control measurements (9).…”
