Laboratory-confirmed hospital-acquired infections: An analysis of a hospital's surveillance data in Nigeria

Abstract: ObjectiveHospital-acquired infections (HAI) are a global problem and a major public health concern in hospitals throughout the world. Quantification of HAI is needed in developing countries; hence we describe the results of a 2-year surveillance data in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria.MethodologyThis study is a 2-year review using secondary data collected at a tertiary referral center in northwestern Nigeria. The data was collected using surveillance forms modeled based on the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) p… Show more

“…20 In addition to frequent isolation S. aureus (41.46%) was highly enumerated species unlike a finding conducted in northwestern Nigeria. 21 These disparities could be due to the different data collection sessions and periods, and sampling mechanisms. As a limitation, applying an automated equipment (mass spectrometry, molecular biology), drugs sensitivity test, measuring air velocity and surface area of the sample collection rooms, and power calculation for sample size estimation as well as controls selection is important for further studies in this area.…”

“…This study was conducted in a private teaching hospital in South-western Nigeria, in two surgical wards (male and female) of the hospital. We chose surgical wards because in Nigeria, surgical wards have the highest occurrence of HCAI when compared to other wards (Ige et al, 2011;Iliyasu et al, 2018).…”

“…In Nigeria, AMR is becoming an issue of concern by the increase in prevalence of multidrug resistant foodborne pathogens in food producing animals as evident in many studies [ 5 8 ]. Furthermore, evidence shows that the prevalence of hospital acquired infections in Nigeria ranged from 6.3 – 15% [ 9 11 ].…”
