Laboratory Capacity for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Surveillance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae—District of Columbia, 2007–2012

Abstract: We report a low prevalence of laboratories performing AST because of multiple barriers. State-specific strategies addressing these barriers are needed to improve detection of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea stains circulating among the population.

“…However, most laboratories conducted serological testing for syphilis (50). A survey of laboratories in the District of Columbia that reported gonorrhea results to the health department demonstrated that among laboratories that conducted gonorrhea cultures, only one third performed antibiotic susceptibility testing (51). A study of clinical laboratories in California reported that gonorrhea culture testing has substantially decreased and gonorrhea and chlamydia tests performed using NAAT have increased over time (52).…”

“…Current clinical practice uses mostly nucleic acid amplification tests to detect N. gonorrhoeae and not culture-based methods ( 4 ). Although those tests yield better clinical outcomes, they do not provide useful antimicrobial drug susceptibility data.…”

“…Although those tests yield better clinical outcomes, they do not provide useful antimicrobial drug susceptibility data. Therefore, factors associated with antimicrobial drug resistance in the general community are not routinely available ( 4 , 5 ).…”

“…Usually, men who have sex with men (MSM) are the core high risk population with high incidence of gonorrhea in those countries. [21][22][23] We con rmed that the availability of laboratory tests of NG is related to case reporting of gonorrhea. The distribution of hospitals with gonorrhea case reporting was consistent with that of hospitals where laboratory tests were available.…”
