Laboratory analogue investigation of defusion and reappraisal strategies in the context of symbolically generalized avoidance

Abstract: The present study examined and compared the effects of 2 analogues of cognitive treatmentscognitive defusion and cognitive reappraisal-on symbolically generalized avoidance established using a basic behavioral laboratory paradigm. This back-translation design contributes to the development and validation of principle-based definitions of the applied constructs of defusion and reappraisal. Eighty-eight participants first underwent basic laboratory procedures designed to establish symbolically generalized avoida… Show more

“…This basic effect has now been replicated and extended several times (Donati, Masuda, Schaefer, Cohen, Tone, & Parrott, 2019;Dymond, Schlund, Roche, De Houwer, & Freegard, 2012;Dymond et al, 2011) and with relations other than equivalence (Bennett, Hermans, Dymond, Vervoort, & Baeyens, 2015;Dymond, Roche, Forsyth, Whelan, & Rhoden, 2007). For example, derived avoidance responses may be altered in accordance with relations of "sameness" (i.e., equivalence) and "opposition" (Dymond et al, 2007).…”

“…A growing number of studies have since replicated and extended these findings regarding the transfer of avoidance‐evoking functions with different experimental preparations (see Boldrin & Debert, 2020; Donati et al, 2019; Dymond et al, 2012; Dymond et al, 2014; Dymond et al, 2011; Gandarela et al, 2020; García‐Guerrero et al, 2014; Luciano et al, 2013, 2014), as well as their transformation according to relations of sameness/opposition (Bennett et al, 2015; Dymond et al, 2007, 2008; Roche et al, 2008). Some of these studies have been framed under the rubric ‘symbolic generalization’ instead of the more traditional behavior‐analytic terminology of ‘transfer/transformation of functions’.…”
