“…During the study period, we have not encountered any or similar problems with the use of oxytocin for labor induction. On the contrary, De Abajo et al, Roungsipragarn et al, and Kramer et al have reported that regardless the substance used, pharmacologic induction of labor is associated with an increased risk of postpartum DIC or AFE [1,2,5]. In their early report [2], Roungsipragarn et al have used oxytocin, after dinoprostone insertion for labor augmentation which resulted with AFE and maternal death, and they have commented that one has to be extra careful when both dinoprostone and oxytocin were used.…”

“…First, all confounding factors which may be in direct relation with AFE should be eliminated, than the pathophysiology of AFE related to PGE 2 should be resolved. However, the possible association between dinoprostone and AFE isn't a new fact and there are reports in the literature suggesting an association between dinoprostone used for labor induction and AFE [1][2][3][4].…”

“…For instance, foetal heartbeat and uterine contractions may be monitored by means of cardiotocogram. Medication may be administered to induce labour or reduce the risk of postpartum haemorrhage (de Abajo et al, 2004). Pain control may also be necessary during labour.…”

“…There are many examples, including: (i) the increased risk of myocardial infarction associated with the use of highly active antiretroviral drugs; [41] (ii) the association of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with bleeding disorders, in particular upper gastrointestinal bleeding; [42,43] and (iii) the association of dinoprostone (a prostaglandin E 2 drug) as a labour inducer with the increased risk of postpartum disseminated intravascular coagulation. [44] Spontaneous reports raised the signal in all of three examples but a rational decision was not possible until the completion of the epidemiological studies. In the first two examples the studies confirmed the hypothesis, but in the latter, the study showed that although there was an increased risk, this was not exclusive to dinoprostone and, therefore, the most probable hypothesis is that the labour induction itself was responsible.…”
