Labeling index in squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx

Abstract: Two cell kinetic parameters, the 3H-thymidine labeling index (TLI) and the mitotic index (MI), were studied in vitro on fragments of squamous cell carcinoma tissue of the larynx. They were evaluated to identify those elements able to characterize the growth of these solid tumors. The values of these parameters were analyzed as a function of the clinical stage and the involvement of the regional lymph nodes. Results showed a statistically significant increase in the TLI from stage ll to T3. No statistically sig… Show more

“…Table 2 summarizes the comparison between our results and those of other authors. Table 2 demonstrates that the number of our patients was fewer than that of Chauvel et al [19] and Matturri et al [3] but larger than that of Balzi et al [1]. The median age of the series was similar.…”

“…Chauvel et al [19] scored 1,000 cells per tumor and three fragments per tumor. Matturi et al [3] counted 4,000 total tumor cells and Balzi et al [1] assessed 10,000 tumor cells. We considered cells containing 5 grains or more as labeled.…”
