Label-Free Voltammetric Aptasensor for the Sensitive Detection of Microcystin-LR Using Graphene-Modified Electrodes

Abstract: The development of successful biosensing platforms is highly dependent upon the biorecognition properties of the recognition receptor and the sensitivity of the transducer of the binding signal. The integration of the high affinity and specificity of DNA aptamers with the unique properties of the carbon nanomaterial graphene offers an excellent avenue for sensitive and selective biosensing architectures. In this work, a highly sensitive and selective aptasensor which utilizes an unlabeled DNA aptamer assembled… Show more

“…The enzyme-based biosensors are disadvantageous when compared with the aptatoxisensor, as the recognition enzyme at the center of the biosensor activity usually becomes inhibited by contaminants present in the water sample and so returns in faulty results. In addition, these biosensors are not usually efficient at discriminating between the various cyanotoxin analogs (e.g., nodularins and MC-LR) present in the same sample [44,45,46,47]. The novel aptatoxisensor presented in this study does not suffer from such limitations.…”

“…A linear range of 0.1 pM to 1.0 nM was obtained with a LOD of 1.9 pM. The aptasensor was applied to the analysis of spiked tap water and fish extracts [49].…”

“…However, the tedious procedures for the preparation of the antibodies may limit their wide applications. Recently, alternative biosensors using aptamers as bioreceptors have been proposed [15,16]. Unfortunately, the selected aptamers are available only to a few microcystin congeners.…”
