La2CuO4 sensing electrode configuration influence on sensitivity and selectivity for a multifunctional potentiometric gas sensor

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe effects of electrical contact configuration for La 2 CuO 4 sensing electrodes for a planar-based potentiometric gas sensor were studied in order to further quantify the effects of processing on sensor performance. Five configurations of La 2 CuO 4 were used for the sensing electrode. The La 2 CuO 4 sensing electrode was screen printed opposite a Pt counter electrode on a tape cast YSZ electrolyte. Three sensors were prepared for each configuration to test repeatability. Each sensor was teste… Show more

“…This consists of a solid 8YSZ membrane electrolyte 24,25 with four rectangular working electrodes on the top face and one common reference electrode on the back face. Fe 0.7 Cr 1.3 O 3 is selected as working electrode because of its selectivity toward C 2 H 4 and low cross-sensitivity to CO. 26 Second, platinum is usually employed as reference electrode 3,[10][11][12][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22]27 due to its high catalytic activity while here LSM/8YSZ electrode is employed because of its good ionic conductivity and low price compared to platinum. 28−30 Furthermore, water influence can be critical and affect the device selectivity to C 2 H 4 .…”

“…It was shown that in the close finger configuration, the different semiconductor types, behaved differently in the same gas environment. This behavior is not consistent with, and cannot be explained by Mixed Potential Theory redox reactions alone, but must include other contributions to sensor response, such as geometrical configuration [Macam 2010], electrode microstructure [White 2008 In evaluating the sensing mechanism for LFO and LMO, possible paths for formation of nitrite and nitrate species must be considered. “…Both electrodes are highly porous and were deposited by screen-printing. In literature, materials such as LaCoO 3 [ 11 ], Nb 2 O 5 [ 12 ], Au/8YSZ [ 8 ], SnO 2 [ 13 ], Cr 2 O 3 [ 13 ], La 2 CuO 4 [ 14 ], TiO 2 (+Pd) [ 15 ], La 1−x Sr x Cr 1−y Ga y O 3−δ [ 16 ], Pt/YSZ, MgAl 2 O 4 [ 17 ], and NiO/Au [ 18 ]. Thus, as working electrodes, several perovskites and metal oxides are studied in this work, similar to those aforementioned.…”
