“…However, even in this lone case study, the method of shear strength evaluation and seismic demand evaluation ͑in which compliance of the slide mass was neglected͒ differs from modern practice. It should be noted, for the sake of thoroughness, that some additional case studies of slope displacements in earth dams ͑e.g., La Villita Dam, Mexico, Elgamal et al 1990; San Fernando Dams, Calif., Bardet and Davis 1996͒ and solid-waste landfills ͑Augello et al 1995͒ have been reported, however those case studies have different boundary conditions and material types than are typical of natural slopes, and measured displacements have unknown contributions from volumetric strains in unsaturated compacted soils ͑i.e., seismic compression, for example, see Stewart et al 2001͒. This paper describes a case history involving slope displacements induced by the M W = 6.7 Northridge, California Earthquake. We describe the nature of the earthquake-induced sliding as well as a subsequent rainfall-induced slide, review the results of site exploration work that includes extensive subsurface exploration and laboratory testing for shear strength, and describe the results of backanalyses of both the seismic and rainfall-induced landslides.…”
