Summary This paper explores the role of Hispania in the Atlantic route in Roman times. We analyse the different Atlantic Iberian territories along this route, based on recent archaeological advances and discoveries related to trade as well as the shipping infrastructure. The aim is to explain the origin and evolution of a new maritime area that was completely integrated with the political and commercial structure of the Empire, with trade routes that followed the coastal areas of the Iberian Peninsula all the way to the Mediterranean.

La altura de los faros de época romana en relación con su visibilidad marítima: El Faro de Brigantium y el posible Faro de la campa Torres (Gijón) Mar ResumenAunque son muy escasos los restos arqueológicos de faros costeros de época romana documentados hasta la fecha, parece que, al menos en la zona entre el Cantábrico y el sur de Inglaterra, existían dos categorías de faros en función de sus dimensiones. Se ha planteado el interrogante de si esta dualidad edilicia se debía a causas objetivas (como la importancia del puerto para el Estado romano o las dificultades particulares de la visibilidad del faro), o si por el contrario respondía a diferentes soluciones constructivas propuestas por el arquitecto de la obra (Fernández Ochoa, Morillo, 2009:132).En este trabajo, a través del estudio de dos de los casos de Hispania (el faro de Brigantium, conocido como Torre de Hércules, y el posible faro de la Campa Torres), pretendemos mediante procedimientos SIG arrojar luz sobre la cuestión de si las dimensiones de los faros estaban o no relacionadas con aspectos particulares de su visibilidad desde el mar. Palabras clave: faros romanos, visibilidad, SIG SummaryVery few archaeological remains of Roman coastal lighthouses have been documented to date. However, in respect to building height, it seems that there were two groups of lighthouses in Northern Spain, France and Southern England. C. Fernández Ochoa and A. Morillo recently raised the question of whether this fact was due to Roman State decisions, to visibility practice or to particularities of every building works (Fernández Ochoa, Morillo, 2009:132). This paper deals with Roman lighthouses height related to visibility. The aim is to assess if visibility practice was the main reason to set lighthouses height. GIS viewshed analysis has been applied to the lighthouse of Brigantium (A Coruña, Spain) and to the hypothetical lighthouse of La Campa Torres (Gijón, Spain).
