La3BaSi5N9O2:Ce3+ – A Yellow Phosphor with an Unprecedented Tetrahedra Network Structure Investigated by Combination of Electron Microscopy and Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction

Abstract: Due to the relationship between structure and luminescence properties, detailed crystal structure determination for microcrystalline phosphors is necessary for a profound understanding of materials properties. The yellow phosphor La 3 BaSi 5 N 9 O 2 :Ce 3+ (λ max = 578 nm; fwhm ∼4700 cm −1 ) was characterized by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and synchrotron microfocus diffraction as only agglomerates of crystals with a maximum size of a few μm could be obtained yet. La 3 BaSi 5 N 9 O … Show more

“…The applications range from color TV to fluorescent tubes, fiber amplifiers, biological sensors, lasers, scintillators, pc‐LEDS, novel quantum information technology materials, and many more . A number of different compound classes has been investigated as host lattices, such as halides,, phosphates, molybdates, borates, sulfates, silicates, sulfides, oxynitrides, or nitrides , . Optical properties of Eu 2+ and Ce 3+ in different compounds have, for example, been collected by Dorenbos ,…”

“…The remaining Ba reacts with the preorganized starting materials Si(NH) 2 and LiNH 2 . A similar reaction path was already reported for the synthesis of lanthanum nitridosilicates . The oxygen content is assumed to originate from impurities of commercially acquired starting materials.…”

“…Both crystal structures were confirmed by means of powder X‐ray diffraction data, MAPLE calculations and FTIR spectroscopy. The syntheses were, analogous to La 3 SiN 4 F7 and La 3 BaSi 5 N 9 O 2 :Ce 3+ ,36 based on LaF 3 , hydrides and amides. Consequently, they are further examples that show that the mentioned route is particularly suitable for the synthesis of new lanthanum (oxo)nitridosilicates with diverse crystal structures.…”
