In this paper, we present BV RI imaging data of NGC 613. We use these data to determine the corotation radius of the bar, using the photometric phase crossing method. This method uses the phase angle of the spiral structure in several wavebands, and looks for a crossing between the blue (B) light and the redder wavebands (e.g., R or I).For NGC 613, we find two phase crossings, an outer phase crossing at 136 ± 8 arcsec and an inner phase crossing at 16 ± 8 arcsec. We argue that the outer phase crossing is due to the bar corotation radius, and from the bar length of R bar = 90.0 ± 4.0 arcsec we go on to calculate a relative bar pattern speed of R = 1.5 ±0.1, which is consistent with the results of previous methods described in the literature. For a better understanding of the inner phase crossing, we have created structure maps in all four wavebands and a B − R color map. All of our structure maps and our color map highlight a nuclear ring of star formation at a radius of ∼ 4 arcsec, which had also been observed recently using ALMA. Furthermore, the radius of our inner phase crossing appears to be consistent with the size of a nuclear disk of star formation that has been recently detected and described in the literature. We therefore suggest that the phase crossing method can be used to detect the size of nuclear star formation regions as well as the location of corotation resonances in spiral galaxies.

In Romance, epistemic sentence adverbs expressing certainty often reduce the truth value of the proposition. Examples such as Fr. sûrement and Sp. seguramente convey probability and even doubt rather than certainty. This phenomenon, called epistemic mitigation, is the topic of this paper. It will be shown that the intuitive first glance impression of epistemic mitigation masks a bundle of other factors: subjectivization, inferential mitigation, politeness, “better language”, and style. Italian is shown to keep to baseline subjectivization, while French, Portuguese, and Spanish tend to develop further inferential mitigation. The paper presents “ten facts” that explain the interplay of these factors at the levels of function and culture, and in both synchrony and diachrony. The paper thereby proposes a complex synthesis. Further empirical investigation will be required to test the facts and arguments presented.

The paper examines the semantic effects of modification in phrases combining verbs with so-called short adverbs in French, that is, adjectives (A) used as modifiers of the verb (V), as in aller direct ‘to go direct’ (VA structures). For this purpose, a sample of over 3200 attested examples has been analyzed. Far from being simple verb modifiers in the sense of “manner” modification, the qualitative analysis shows that short adverbs also refer to other features of the event, e.g. participant, instrument, source, goal, result, circumstance, and the speaker’s attitude. These manifold modification scopes are then described by means of a newly created event-modification frame. The theoretical discussion of these results tackles the relationship between structure, construction, and baseline elaboration, constructions being conceived as cognitive developments of baseline VA structure. Baseline elaboration thus turns out to be a necessary complementary approach to construction grammar. However, neither construction nor baseline elaboration allows the full prediction of the meaning of a given VA structure since both ways of accessing meaning leave considerable space for inferential interpretation. The corpus also allows the quantification of the modified event features, that is, the frequency with which the slots of the frame are accessed by modification via VA structure. Quantification thereby provides the general modification profile of VA structures (as opposed to the individual modification profiling of a given VA structure in a single utterance).
