Objective: To characterize and determine the consumption preferences for goat products in different regions of Mexico. Design/methodology/approach: An exploratory study was carried out through a survey addressed to 300 consumers. The sample was obtained through convenience sampling. The semi-structured questionnaire was divided into the following sections: sociodemographic information, willingness to consume, type of derivative products known, and frequency of consumption. The Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to determine significant variables. Results: It was found that milk, cheese, and meat are the most relevant foods for goat consumption. These products are ideal for expanding the diversification of consumption in Mexican regions. Limitations on study/implications: To deepen the analysis of the sociodemographic and consumption characteristics, it is necessary to consider a greater number of variables. Findings/conclusions: Knowing the products that are consumed most frequently allows more effective and efficient strategies to be generated and, in turn, opens the pattern for consumption diversification.

In Tamaulipas extensive goat production systems in the semi-arid region of the Altiplano contribute annually with the production of 41% of live animals and 87% of milk in the state. The objective of the study was to characterize the goat production units in the municipalities of Jaumave, Bustamante and Tula, in which a significant number of production units are located. Through the application of structured surveys conducted in December 2021 and January 2022, socioeconomic, nutritional, productive, reproductive, and sanitary information was obtained from 40 goat production units. Data was analyzed using principal component factor analysis and a cluster analysis with the Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS version 24). Four factors (management, production, grazing and reproduction) explained most of the total variation of the data and four groups of production units were determined. The characterization of the extensive goat production system in the Altiplano of Tamaulipas is described in general terms with management and production variables. However, the analysis of the typologies of production units showed heterogeneity in the system, in this sense, the differences between the means of the groupings that stood out the most were zootechnical purpose, reproduction, production and annual income. Underfeeding, scarce water sources and poor reproductive management are associated with low productivity and high animal mortality.

Objective. To evaluate the economic viability of incorporating a long term-supplementary feeding scheme in grazing local goats from the last third of gestation and throughout lactation. Materials and methods. Twenty-four local goats were utilized: control group (CG, n=12) and supplemented group (SG; n=12). Daily milk production (DMP) was recorded in goats, per lactation (MPLT), and per lactation stage [early (MPEL) middle (MPML), and late lactation (MPLL)], duration of lactation (DL; days), final live weight (FLW), and final body condition (FBC). In kids, birth weight (BW), weight at sale (WS), age at sale (AS), and mortality rate were recorded. The economic analysis considered the costs of daily supplementation, labor for handling and care of the animals, and sale prices of milk and kids. Results. The best productive behavior and the highest incomes were obtained in SG (p<0.05) for all variables, except AS and mortality rate. The highest values in CG (p<0.05) were obtained in AS and economic profit in almost all the considered variables, Except in MPEL. Positive profits were obtained in SG in early and middle lactation, and negative in late lactation for SG, but with higher FBC. Conclusions. A long-term supplementary feeding is economically viable to increase income and profits from kids and milk sales and improves the body condition of the dams, which will benefit the productivity of the herd.
