“…Another species found to have limited distribution in our survey was P. papatasi , the acknowledged vector of a viral infection known as 3‐day sandfly fever. P. papatasi was present in eight of the 18 areas in relatively small populations, a finding in accordance with the results of earlier surveys on the Ionian and Aegean islands (Pesson et al , 1984) and in continental Greece (Léger et al , 1979), but not those of other surveys (Hadjinicolaou, 1958; Chaniotis et al , 1994; Papadopoulos & Tselentis, 1994). This discrepancy may be due to the higher percentage of domestic sites explored by the latter researchers.…”

“…On Crete we found P. neglectus to be much more abundant than it had been in 1958 (Hadjinicolaou, 1958) and we detected its presence nearly everywhere on the island. Furthermore, we did not detect P. similis (identified as P. sergenti in Pesson et al , 1984) on Cephalonia, nor P. simici on Samos (collected in the past by Pesson et al , 1984). These differences may have occurred because of differences in collecting techniques and study sites, but may also be a consequence of environmental and climatic changes in these regions.…”

“…terranéennes. En particulier le nombre moyen de dents cibariales chez la femelle s'inscrit à la place attendue dans le cline nord-sud précédemment mis en évidence (Rioux et al, 1975;Léger ét al, 1979;Belazzoug ét al, 1982;Pesson et al, 1984) (Fig. 10) L'histoire géologique de Chypre, dont le début de l'émergence date du Miocène inférieur, fait apparaître deux périodes possibles de peuplement.…”

“…The mean number of cibarial teeth in S. m inuta was 41.25 (range 38-44), confirming the presence in Italy of the sub species S. m. minuta (mean number of cibarial teeth 42 in Europe), being the other subspecies, S. rn. parroti, confined to North Africa (mean number of cibarial teeth 69) (Rioux et al, 1975;Leger et al, 1979;Belazzoug et al, 1982 andPesson et al, 1984).…”
