expresó su preocupación ante los numerosos casos de discriminación, rechazo y odio que se han producido contra la comunidad gitana. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo principal conocer el tratamiento mediático utilizado para dar cobertura a las noticias de prensa que vinculan el COVID-19 con la comunidad gitana en España. La metodología desarrollada es de carácter mixto, utilizando el análisis del discurso y el de contenido como técnicas de investigación. El análisis de datos se realiza con el software ATLAS.ti. Los resultados principales reflejan que las atribuciones estereotipadas de la comunidad gitana, como un exogrupo con bajo estatus social, precario, conflictivo, delincuencial y peligroso, se han intensificado en el contexto del COVID-19. Por otra parte, se han evidenciado nuevas atribuciones que representan a la comunidad gitana como "transmisores del COVID-19", reforzando una imagen como población que atenta contra la salud pública del país. Se concluye alertando que las representaciones sociales de la comunidad gitana en la prensa española favorecen la (re)producción de escenarios de conflictividad, estigmatización y rechazo.

Implementation of Service-Learning as a Strategy to Foster Intercultural Coexistence in the Local Community: A Case Study

Service-learning (SL) is a participatory teaching–learning methodology through which students learn certain content while also meeting a number of real social needs in their environment. The implementation of SL in different areas and educational stages has been extensively described. However, its potential as a community and intercultural development strategy at the local level has not been widely studied. Through a documentary analysis, the present work sought to understand the characteristics of socio-educational interventions, which, based on the service-learning methodology, aim at improving coexistence in local communities with a high degree of cultural diversity. A total of 18 projects were included in a community programme implemented in the municipality of Elche (Spain) between 2010 and 2016. They all focused or included the promotion of intercultural coexistence among their objectives. The study design was quantitative, with a descriptive and explanatory, univariate and bivariate analysis using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences 26. The results showed that service-learning can contribute to the improvement of intercultural coexistence. Moreover, a number of SL basic, pedagogical and organisational components are enhanced when integrated into broader community development processes.

This chapter makes a literature review based on the Grant and Booth qualitative systematic methodology of the studies about the educational situation of the Roma in Spain, with an wider, extended scope that allows to compare the findings with those conducted on other countries’ Roma populations. Studies on the Roma educational situation in Spain are hindered by the lack of official, periodical statistics, having to rely on sample-based surveys and ethnographic studies. In spite of the inaccuracy of the studies all of them show, as a general picture, a staggering educational gap between the Roma and the rest of society which is common to all Western countries. Most of the studies on Roma education have concentrated in this negative aspect. Numerous theoretical frameworks have been developed to explain this staggering education gap. All them acknowledge the phenomenon as a multidimensional one but for heuristic purposes they can be ordered along an endogenous/exogenous factors continuum depending on how much they stress the weight of factors stemming from characteristics of the Roma ethnic group itself or, on the contrary, of the majority non-Roma society. The literature review has also identified an emergent critical current that sees this studies focused on educational underachievement as a sharing a common essentialist bias that helps to reinforce the stigmatization of Roma and have turned to focus, instead, on the study of academic success among the Roma. Although this emerging field is very promising, our review has identify several significant research gaps in this regard: a lack of longitudinal studies, a lack of studies on the Roma upper and middle classes and a lack of studies on Roma students in post-compulsory education, particularly the university level. This article encourages researchers to fill this gaps with the conviction that the knowledge obtained can help combat the negative stereotypes and the self-fulfilling prophecy effect that approaches focused on Roma underachievement may have.
