Over the past year, defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have witnessed a boom in applying key emerging technologies in education. In such challenging situations, technology and education expanded their work together to strengthen and interactively impact the learning process in the online higher education context. From a pedagogical perspective, extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI) were accessible toolboxes to amplify an active and learner-centered teaching method. Whether and how such activities will continue in a post-COVID-19 situation remains unclear. In this systematic literature review, we document the application of XR and AI in online higher education settings and build up an accurate depiction of their influence after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. A significant contribution of the thorough analysis conducted was the corroboration of the growing interest of these fast-emerging technologies and their impact on learner agency and outcomes, making online education more accessible, effective, engaging, collaborative, self-paced, and adapted to the diverse academic trajectories. The momentum brought about by the pandemic has served as an impulse for educators and universities to expand the use of these technologies progressively, meet new challenges, and shape the future of online higher education.

The general objective of this research was to analyze the preferences towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) in university professors in Ecuador, particularly those who teach the subject of Microeconomics. The methodology used was quantitative, descriptive, field-typed, and non-experimental, based on documentary research. The population consisted of 25 teachers from three state universities in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. The data collection technique was the survey and the instrument was a questionnaire of closed questions, which was applied through the Google Forms platform. The results found indicate that a large majority know about the use of AI in higher education; they also consider that the benefits that AI brings to education are to improve teaching, a large percentage indicated not to use AIs to teach Microeconomics, a small number of teachers who use AI, do it for data analysis through Machine Learning, the fact of the little use of this technology among teachers is mainly due to the absence of university policies on the use of artificial intelligence. Among the conclusions, the formulation of educational policies oriented to the implementation of artificial intelligence in Ecuadorian universities, the adaptation of infrastructure, and the investment of resources for this purpose are considered essential, as well as the training of teaching staff to take full advantage of this technology that is already a reality in many national and international contexts.

Para el contexto educativo, las escuelas y universidades llevan décadas intentando implementar y utilizar nuevas herramientas de información y comunicación en los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Su objetivo explícito es encontrar formas más sencillas, más baratas y que requieran menos tiempo para comunicar, transferir o impartir información. En este contexto, la Inteligencia Artificial (IA), como una herramienta potencial tecnológica, sin ser nueva, se expande en todos los ámbitos profesionales y del conocimiento, afectando, impactando y causando una verdadera revolución en el campo de la educación. La presente investigación se enmarca dentro de una metodología de tipo bibliográfica documental. Ya que es un proceso sistematizado de recolección, selección, evaluación y análisis de la información, que se ha obtenido mediante medios electrónicos en diferentes repositorios y buscadores tales como Google Académico, Science Direct, Pubmed, entre otros, empleando para ellos los diferentes operadores booleanos y que servirán de fuente documental, para el tema antes planteado. La capacidad en el almacenamiento de datos e interpretación de la inteligencia artificial, la hace atractiva para todos los campos de la sociedad, obviamente la educación no pasa desapercibida, la inteligencia artificial tiene la capacidad de adaptarse a los entornos y puede ser configurada para ello, en el ámbito educativo que está en constante innovación y búsqueda de herramientas para la optimización del aprendizaje, ha empezado a tomar relevancia desde las últimas décadas, al hacer de una manera más atractiva la forma de educar y no seguir un proceso educativo monótono, de vieja escuela.
