The extensive studies on the chromosomes of the Chiroptera made by Makino (1948) and Bovey (1949) have furnished valuable data toward understanding the evolutionary relation to the Insectivora which stands in close relationship to the Primates.Thanks to their work, the chromosome conditions of fourteen species of bats have been presented in sufficient detail, and the cytotaxonomical connection with the related orders has been discussed.The present author has made a study of the chromosomes of the Japanese house bat, Pipistrellus tralatitus abramus, a member of Vespertilionidae (Microchiroptera), by the application of an improved water-pretreatment squash technique which produced good chromosome slides available for the morphological analysis of chromosomes in a considerable detail. The results are presented in this paper.
