Text analysis traditions in France and the United States include discourse analysis, critical linguistics, French functional linguistics, Bakhtinian dialogics, and "generous reading." These frames have not been used, however, in crosscultural analysis of university student writing. The author presents a study of 250 student texts from French and U.S. introductory university courses, using a methodology for cross-cultural analysis that draws on other French and U.S. methodologies, particularly those using the dialogic utterance as a unit of analysis, but extended by the tools of reprise-modification and textual movement. The results provide a complex picture of university students' writing as a site of social-textual dynamics, resisting more traditional contrastive approaches while reintroducing a focus on the text. The interpretive analysis brought out more commonality than difference; the author hypothesizes that students entering the university share a discourse of learning and negotiation across cultural contexts. The methodology supports cross-cultural analysis beyond "discourses of difference." This reflection looks at a phenomenon that arouses the interest of postcolonism in the lierary field. These are two key aspects of enunciative heterogeneity, namely literary dialoguism or polyphony in the novel. The aim is to question the different motivations of these heterogeneous practices in the novelistic work Kroh ! Les femmes ont déserté la maison of Burkinabe journalist Yacouba Traoré under the term dialogism which, like his colleagues on a continental africain or even global scale, do not hesitate to oppose by their literary and/or artistic productions the historically established canons of the novel genre or the « genetic puritanism ». The multiplication of heterogeneous practices essential to enunciative heterogeneity participates in the renewal of the theory of the novel, and therefore of literary theory. RÉSUMÉ : La présente réflexion se penche sur un phénomène qui suscite l’intérêt du postcolonialisme dans le domaine littéraire. Il s’agit d’un aspect clé de l’hétérogénéité énonciative à savoir le dialogisme ou la polyphonie littéraire dans le roman. Le but étant de s’interroger sur les différentes motivations de ces pratiques hétérogènes dans l’œuvre romanesque Kroh ! Les femmes ont déserté la maison du journaliste burkinabè Yacouba Traoré sous le vocable dialogisme qui, à l’instar de ses confrères à l’échelle continentale africaine voire mondiale, n’hésitent à s’opposer dans leurs productions littéraires et/ou artistiques aux canons historiquement établis du genre romanesque ou du « puritanisme générique ». La démultiplication des pratiques hétérogènes indispensables à l’hétérogénéité énonciative participe au renouvellement de la théorie du roman, et partant de la théorie littéraire.

The Effect of Doxa in the Identification and Interpretation of Polyphonic Irony This article aims at identifying the role which plays the doxy in the process of identification and interpretation of the polyphonic irony. The analysis leans on a comparison of two main francophone polyphonic theories, theory of the mentions of Sperber and Wilson (1978) and polyphonic theory of Ducrot (1984). The first theory is from a référentialiste inspiration because it leans on extralinguistic elements to interpret the irony, while the second is from an aréférentialiste inspiration (integrated pragmatics) because it stipulates that all the elements necessary for the interpretation of the irony are in the language itself. The corpus on which leans this study is the Algerian satiric newspaper El-Manchar (electronic version). Through the comparative analysis of several ironic occurrences stemming from our corpus - by the theoretical tools offered by both theories in question, we will demonstrate that the doxy is an element-key. Indeed, without the help of the notion of doxy, any attempt of interpretation of the polyphonic irony is straightaway doomed to failure.
