“…In April 1998, during the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (Minneapolis, MN), a group of Iberoamerican neurologists, aware that stroke was becoming a major public health problem in Latin America, held a preliminary discussion on the feasibility and importance of creating a stroke society in the region. This idea was consolidated some months later, during an international stroke meeting held in Guayaquil, Ecuador (October 1998), where neurologists from Spain, Portugal and countries of South and Central America undersigned the ‘Declaration of Guayaquil’ (1) by which they founded the Iberoamerican Cerebrovascular Diseases Society [Sociedad Iberoamericana de Enfermedades Cerebrovasculares (SIECV)].…”
